Dog walking rules

What the law allows and forbids, where to walk, and what a breach costs.

On a lead at all times
In public — courtyards, streets, parks, transport — a dog must be on a lead. You may let it off in fenced dog parks.
A muzzle for large breeds
Large and potentially dangerous dogs need a muzzle as well as a lead. The list of breeds is approved separately — check with your city administration.
Clean up after your dog
Leaving faeces in a courtyard, on a pavement or on grass is an offence. Always carry a bag.
Not on playgrounds
Playgrounds and sports grounds, school and nursery grounds, and beaches are off limits.
Not while intoxicated
Someone who cannot control themselves cannot control a dog. The rule is spelled out in the law.
Not a large dog with a child
Whoever walks the dog must be able to physically hold it. Formally the owner is responsible either way.

In an equipped dog park your dog can run off the lead. Below are the parks we found on the map.
